Dresses in come in all shapes and sizes – fortunately – but also in so many styles. There’s the formal, tailored and short little black dress (see: how to sew a black dress) to the long, loose and flowing maxi-dress (see: how to sew a maxi dress). This video tutorial shows you how to sew a dress for beginners that is somewhere between these other two extremes -–it’s tailored and flowing, not long, or short.
To sew this project, all you need is Approximately 1.5 Metres of Fabric, a Zipper, Thread, Scissors, Pins, Measuring Tape and Sewing machine… and best of all, NO PATTERN! This easy-to-follow video shows each step of construction with a sketch drawing and then demonstrates that step with the material. This is not a ‘quick’ sew but is straight forward.
Warning : You might find that if you watch the video all the way through in one go that you’ll feel completely overwhelmed by the process. It is a good idea for this project to watch the first couple of steps so that you feel confident and then start sewing. Of course, if you want to know what it is you are sewing (What! And spoil the surprise!) then you will need to have a sneak preview of the last 30 seconds of the video.
In the first step, the video guide uses a measurement of eight inches. This measurement has been obtained by measuring the distance between her shoulders (14 inches) adding on two inches for seam allowance and dividing by two. If you measure wider than 14 inches then you will need to increase this initial measurement to suit.
